It’s that time of year: college admissions season. We hear yells of joy, moans of disappointment, and sighs about the financial impact of it all.

A couple weeks ago Ivy League admissions bloomed. We moved on to the Wait List lilt. And we are now resolving it all by negotiating How Much It Will Cost For Real.

For many Americans, the cost question can be the most important. Some colleges and every conservative political partisan is blaming the slow FAFSA rollout for delayed financial aid responses. More thoughtful analysis knows that the cost of college education goes far deeper than a system rollout that every thoughtful person guessed would have hiccups.
