The 2020’s make the Eighties feel like a simple, happy time.

That’s great, it starts with an earthquake*

In 1987, the fear of a still-strident Soviet Union actually kept Americans largely together in conservative and liberal packs not so far apart.

Today…People want to fight everyone, everywhere.

Birds and snakes, and aeroplanes*

In 1987, our biggest problem was Wall Street: Greed is good!

Today…Our debates are legion.

And Lenny Bruce is not afraid.*

In 1987, bands like The Smiths sang about the problems of the day, but people could listen to the music while ignoring the message. And REM could spout streams of words that felt senseless but captured some essence of the time.*

Today…We search out insults like heat-seaking missiles.

The question is…How can we stop Americans from falling apart?

Change management experts debate this question a lot:

“What inspires people to change?”

These are the folks brought into organizations stuck in yesterday’s world. They help the buggy whip maker…
